Today CollabNet released Lab Management 2.5, the latest version of its popular application for build & test server provisioning. This is a pretty big deal, especially in the context of initiatives such as Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and DevOps.

When deployed with TeamForge, Lab Management 2.5 enables:

Self-service provisioning of servers for dev / test staff, accelerating release cycles, while eliminating VM sprawl (the latter by automatically decommissioning machines no longer needed to the server pool)

Hybrid cloud brokerage for bare metal, public & private clouds, reducing capital & operations cost, and reducing security risk; in particular, by following common security protocols, and providing enterprise-wide visibility into cloud usage (from a technical and cost perspective)

IT policy compliance with versioned approved templates, ensuring production-ready software builds, hence avoiding the dreaded “go live surprises”

From a technical perspective, Lab Management 2.5 now takes advantage of Apache Libcloud, a library that enables integration with over 25 popular public cloud providers. Developers and build & test teams can tap into multiple public (like Amazon EC2) and private clouds alike, including CollabNet CloudForge. Furthermore, they even can provision “bare iron” machines from the same portal interface, enabling scenarios such as “cloud bursting”. That drives convenience and efficiency, while at the same time letting customers optimize machine & cloud utilization.
