The estimates themselves are usually inaccurate, but the process of getting people together in a room to discuss the stories (particularly what’s in and out of scope, and candidate implementation approaches) improves the stories and the common understanding of them.

Something else people tend to trip over is the distinction between estimate and commitment. We estimate to
    1) Improve the quality of the stories
    2) Improve our understanding of the stories
    3) Give the Product Owner a rough guess on price tag, to help prioritize stories considering ROI.

Commitment doesn’t occur until the Sprint Planning Meeting, and the stories have been tasked out, which is independent of estimation.
